30-year study proves organic farming superior in every way!

The Rodale Institute has recently press released the results of a rigorous 30-year study:

“Rodale Institute today announces the latest results of the Farming Systems Trial, America’s longest running side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming practices. Originally created to study the transition from conventional to organic production, this 30-year study also examined productivity, soil quality, energy and economics.

Key findings show:
* Organic yields match or surpass conventional yields.
* Organic yields outperform conventional yields in years of drought.
* Organic farming systems build rather than deplete soil organic matter, making it a more sustainable system.
* Organic farming uses 45 percent less energy and is more efficient.
* Conventional agricultural systems produce 40 percent more greenhouse gases.
* Organic farming systems are more profitable than conventional farming systems.

After 30 years of a rigorous side-by-side comparison, the Rodale Institute confidently concludes that organic methods are improving the quality of our food, the health of our soils and water, and the conditions of our nation’s rural areas.”

Cape Cod Restaurant Week ’09, Oct 12 – Oct 18

With very comfortable weather and far less traffic than in the previous months, September and October can often be the best time of year to visit Cape Cod.  And with many unique independent restaurants scattered throughout the region, there are likely many that you haven’t discovered yet.  Plan a trip Cape-side for the area’s first official Restaurant Week in mid-October and find some new favorite spots to return to through the offseason!  These events will be held from October, Monday the 12th – Sunday the 18th, 2009 at participating restaurants from Bourne to Provincetown, MA.  Stay tuned to this site for the restaurant lineup, TBA 08/18.

From off-Cape, it’s nearly a straight line to the area from wherever you might be.  Get on I-195 East or I-495 South to best reach Falmouth and Mashpee via the Bourne Bridge, or take Rt. 3 South heading over the Sagamore Bridge and becoming Rt. 6 East to visit the rest of the Cape.  With the Rt. 6 Scenic Highway connecting the two bridges’ entrances, it’s also easy to traverse from one to the other.

Restaurant Week Tips for Preparation:

1. Make your reservations for Restaurant Week early as they may go quickly.

2. Please do not make reservations at more than one restaurant for the same meal period, as it prevents others from getting the reservations they want.

3. If you need to cancel your reservation, do so with as much notice as possible so restaurants have the opportunity to rebook their table.

4. Look for specially priced wine pairings to accompany your meal choices – some restaurants will offer wines by the glass specifically paired to accompany the meal.

5. Tax and gratuity are not included in the prix fixe price.  Be sure to show your appreciation for good service by tipping appropriately.
